Our People | Meet Matthew Eyo-Tonks

At Redwood Bank, our people are firmly at the heart of everything we do. We understand that when you work with us, you want and expect a personal relationship to enable quick decision making and flexible solutions. This is why we’ve taken some time out to speak to the people that power Redwood Bank.

Book and board game enthusiast Matt Eyo-Tonks joined Redwood Bank earlier this year as a Loan Portfolio Analyst. When he’s not pouring over data, he’s delving into the latest Stephen King thriller or watching Arnold Schwarzenegger in action.

What is your role within Redwood Bank?

I am the analyst within the Portfolio and Credit Management teams and broadly speaking, I support Redwood Bank’s efforts to fully understand the existing customer portfolio and provide outstanding customer service, and in addition, to help protect the Bank’s lending book.

If you weren’t doing this, you’d be…

Writing the novel(s) I promised myself that I would get published in my lifetime.

What’s the one standout piece of feedback you have received from a customer?

The best feedback I see in the data is when customers are quoted as saying they would use Redwood again or recommend us to others.

I have only been at Redwood a few months but transforming the MI within the team since joining has clearly made an immediate impact in the Bank. How we use and dissect data really helps us to drive better customer outcomes.

What’s the best piece of advice you have received in the past three years?

Be the best version of you – we only get one lifetime to be who we want and do what we want, so make it count and you’ll be content within yourself.

What should we watch out for in the wider industry in the next three years? Any game-changers on the horizon?

I think we may see a growing focus on Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) within the industry as companies consider their impact on the climate and surrounding communities/environments following COP26 and recent climate disasters that have made the news in recent months.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in banking?

Be a sponge and soak up all the knowledge you can! There’s more than you could ever hope to learn and even if you don’t know all the answers someone else will (and vice versa).

Tell us something about you we don’t know please?

I am profoundly deaf and have a cochlear implant; in spite of this I seem to have made it through life well enough so far. I also have a collection of around 400 board/card games.

What three people, dead or alive, would you invite to your ultimate dinner party?

Stephen King – my favourite author of all time; he has penned some iconic horror stories and characters which have stayed with me.

Arnold Schwarzenegger – my favourite movie action hero of all time (despite a number of duds!).

Sir Alex Ferguson – not that I am a Man Utd fan! I am a big football fan and his tenure at Old Trafford was second to none, so no doubt he’d be full of endless stories and surprises about the beautiful game.
