Leading Challenger Bank donates to Warrington community as food crisis deepens due to COVID-19

Redwood Bank has handed £600 to the Warrington Foodbank organisation, whose service demands have more than doubled since April.

As part of its work, the charity provides emergency food to people in crisis within the local community and aims to provide three days’ worth of nutritionally balanced emergency meals to those people who find themselves in crisis situations.

Gary Wilkinson, CEO and Co-Founder of Redwood Bank, said:

"As a new Bank who have one of our two offices based in Warrington, we feel we have a corporate responsibility to help and support local charities with their work. Not only that, but as a team we're passionate about supporting the local communities with a range of sponsorship and charitable initiatives led by our staff."

"There are desperate people across Warrington who are going hungry for all sorts of reasons, ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. We hope our donation will go some way in supporting the Warrington Foodbank in helping those who need it most during these challenging times."

At the moment the foodbank’s main town centre outlet, located at Tanning Court which is behind DFS on the Riverside Retail Park, remains open, although there are social distancing measures in place.

Foodbank’s Project Manager David McDonald said: "We are incredibly grateful to Redwood Bank for its generous donation to help tackle hardship and a food crisis across the town. The money will help to relieve the desperate food crisis we are currently experiencing across Warrington.

"A simple box of food makes a big difference, with foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems. Recently our services have been in huge demand. We normally support around 120 to 140 individuals and families per week, but requests for help have been flooding in and in April we were supporting more than 300 people, many of whom had never accessed charitable support before."

Figures released by the Food Foundation have shone a spotlight on a national hunger crisis, with five million people in the UK living in households with children under 18 currently experiencing food insecurity since the start of lockdown. That figure is double the amount reported by the Food Standards Agency in 2018.

The Warrington Foodbank is part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by the Trussell Trust and registered with the Charity Commission for England & Wales, with full charitable status.

This is the third charitable donation that Redwood Bank has pledged in recent months. In April, the Bank made a cash donation to the East & North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity, a non-government funded organisation, which was set up to support healthcare workers at the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. This was followed by a further cash donation in May to the Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, an organisation that raises funds to help people who have been in hospital and require some extra help beyond the services the NHS provides.
