Our People | Meet Mark Dobson

Nurturing relationships and delivering on promises is the key to success as a Business Development Manager, according to Redwood’s Head of South Mark Dobson. Here we get to know what makes him tick, where he’d jet off to on a dream holiday, and his pride in coaching a successful youth football team.

Tell us about your route into your current role…

I spent 13 years at RBS as a Relationship Manager, and the last five years as a broker Business Development Manager. A year ago, I left that position for Redwood Bank.

Describe your average day…

I spend most of my time talking to brokers about prospective customers and their lending requirements, shaping cases for presentation to the underwriters and seeing them through to completion.

What do you think is the most important quality to have as a Business Development Manager?

Developing good working relationships with your brokers, who really are your trusted business partners, and making sure you deliver for them and their customers.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Getting the loans approved for both the broker and the customer.

Tell us about a time when you used your problem-solving skills to progress a case or secure a sale…

I recently helped a customer who was struggling to get a loan approved on the commercial asset neighbouring their trading premises – they were concerned about a competitor moving in. They needed a quick decision, didn’t have the cash deposit and there were issues with the existing tenant. Following a site visit with the customer, I arranged a mortgage against their business along with an investment property which gave them sufficient funds to secure the asset as an investment, all in time to fend off the competitor. We’re already considering a second facility for them.

What is the key to nurturing relationships with customers and brokers?

Building trust, being reliable and delivering on your promises as quickly as possible.

What do you wish you’d known when you started out in your career?

How important your network is to your success, both internally within your organisation and externally.

Describe your dream weekend…

At the beach with family and friends, hot weather, a barbeque, and a cold beer or three!

What’s the best holiday you’ve ever been on?

Florida Keys. Touring the different islands, with the hot weather, amazing beaches and unique cultures, it’s a holiday with a bit of everything!

Tell us about an achievement you’re proud of…

Starting a youth football team with a group of eight-year-olds who didn’t know each other, working with them for five years, taking them to the top of the highest division and winning a trophy every year!
