Stuart, who was the Head of Underwriting, started at Redwood in October last year and has 35 years’ experience in banking, with previous roles including Head of Credit Risk and Underwriting at both Credit Suisse and Barclays Private Bank. Stuart has also worked at UBS, Royal Bank of Canada (both in the UK and Jersey), Coutts, and Midland Bank.
Career highlights so far include playing an active role in the implementation of major regulatory projects, such as Mortgage Market Reviews and the creation of residential stress testing for the Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Process (ICAAP) at Credit Suisse, as well as writing credit policy and chairing the Credit Suisse Credit Committee.
Redwood ethos
Stuart said: “One of the things that attracted me to Redwood was the ethos of the Bank, and it’s certainly lived up to my expectations. In the short time I have been here, what has made an instant impression is the Bank’s openness to new ideas and approaches.
“It’s something I’m looking forward to in my new role as Director of Credit and Underwriting. I’ve got some big shoes to fill as Chris has significantly developed the role and helped to put the Bank in a strong position, but I’m excited by the challenge ahead.”
Stuart said the opportunities offered by Redwood, including project work, shaping policy and input into senior management committees, have been invaluable in terms of his professional development. Managing a high-performing team has also been rewarding, he says.
In his spare time, Stuart has recently re-discovered a love of the Italian language and is learning it again after winning a national spoken Italian competition in his younger years.
An avid Tottenham Hotspur fan, Stuart is interested in a variety of sports and in the past, enjoyed playing football, cricket, squash, tennis and skiing. He still plays golf and has run two half marathons.
Soon to be retiring, after over 40 years in banking, Chris is looking forward to spending more time with his grandchildren, travelling, and learning Italian.
Chris, who landed his first job in banking at the age of 16, spent most of his career at RBS and NatWest. He held numerous senior roles, including Head of Commercial Credit and Head of Corporate Risk for the RBS Divestment programme, as well as Head of Business Lending Operations and Head of Commercial Credit London.
After being attracted by the idea of being part of a new bank from its inception, Chris joined Redwood in early 2017, prior to the Bank achieving its full Banking Licence in August 2017.
He said: “My time at Redwood has been the perfect way to end my career – it presented a new challenge for me to get my teeth into, and I leave knowing the Bank is in safe hands with Stuart. I know he will continue to develop the role and help the Bank go from strength to strength.
‘Part of innovative team’
“I’d like to thank all my colleagues at Redwood for their support and for the senior management team and the Board for the opportunities I’ve been given. It’s good to go out on a high after being part of such an innovative team.”
Gary Wilkinson, Redwood’s Chief Executive Officer & Co-Founder, said: “We wish Chris the very best for the future, and on behalf of the Bank I’d like to thank him for his very valuable input since joining. As one of the first members of staff we took on, he’s played a crucial role in shaping the Bank.
“Stuart is an ideal replacement and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role. With a strong track record and his existing knowledge of the Bank, he’s ideally placed for taking on the position of Director of Credit and Underwriting.”
